Material

What is Corten steel – and how does the weathering patina form?

Rust that protects instead of destroying: that's exactly what makes Corten steel a favourite material for gardens and architecture.

Corten steel is a weathering structural steel. Its alloy causes a firmly adhering, rust-brown surface layer to form outdoors – the so-called weathering patina. It seals the material underneath and strongly slows further corrosion. The result: a warm, lively rust look, without the part ever rusting through.

Your cut parts arrive unweathered and can then quietly “get to work” outdoors: depending on the weather, the patina develops over a few weeks to months, becoming deeper and more even along the way. Painting, coating, maintenance? Not necessary – Corten steel does that on its own.

As a guide: the material cost basis for Corten is €4.00/kg (as of August 2026) – as a raw material basis, not a part price. What your design actually costs depends on size, thickness, cut length and quantity, and is confirmed instantly after upload. It's cut on the same fibre laser machine as all industrial parts – more on that on the Laser cutting page. Would you rather have colour than rust? Then steel parts with powder coating in RAL shades are the alternative.

Care

Maintain weathering steel? No need – just two things to keep in mind

Corten steel is one of the most rewarding materials in the garden: no painting, no sealing, no winter storage.

  • Plan for rust streaks: During weathering, rainwater can carry rust particles onto light-coloured paving. It's best to let parts weather initially on gravel, a bed or a base – once the patina has matured, this eases off considerably.
  • Avoid waterlogging: The patina loves the alternation between wet and dry. Avoid edges standing permanently in water, and the protection will hold reliably.
  • Otherwise the rule is: set it up, wait, and enjoy – the surface gains more character every year.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Corten steel laser cutting

Can I have Corten steel laser cut as a private individual?

Yes. Laserteile Online expressly manufactures for private customers too – with no business registration required, from a single part. A minimum order value of €50 net plus shipping applies. Ordering is easy via the instant price calculator or by individual enquiry.

How long does it take for the weathering patina to develop?

The parts are delivered bare or with mill scale and start rusting on their own outdoors. Depending on the weather, the typical patina develops over a few weeks to months – alternating rain and dry spells speeds up the process, and the colour becomes deeper and more even over time.

Does Corten steel ever rust through?

No, that's exactly what the material is made for: Corten steel is a weathering structural steel whose alloy forms a firmly adhering rust layer. This patina acts as a protective layer and strongly slows further corrosion – unlike ordinary steel. You should still avoid permanent waterlogging, though.

Can I send a sketch instead of a CAD file?

Yes. If you don't have a DXF or DWG file, simply send your sketch, drawing or design idea via the enquiry form. Laserteile Online will then get back to you with a quote for your desired part.

What does a single piece in Corten steel cost?

That depends on size, thickness and contour – the instant price calculator shows the price in about 60 seconds, with no registration. The floor is the minimum order value of €50 net plus shipping. The material cost basis for Corten is €4.00/kg (as of August 2026).

Are logos and protected designs laser cut too?

Your own designs, names and motifs: yes, very gladly. Files and logos subject to trademark law, however, are not manufactured – so Laserteile Online cannot produce third-party club crests or company logos.

What thicknesses and sizes are possible for Corten steel?

Corten (weathering steel) is available in the calculator in 13 thicknesses from 0.5 to 15 mm, and the maximum sheet format is 3,000 × 1,500 mm. That means delicate decorative motifs are just as feasible as large-format privacy screens.

Does Corten steel leave rust marks on the patio?

During the initial weathering phase, run-off rainwater can carry rust particles and stain light-coloured paving. It's best to let the parts weather initially on gravel, a bed or a base, and keep some distance from sensitive stone surfaces. Once the patina has matured, this eases off considerably.
